Andrew Wight

Died February 4, 2012.

Australian screenwriter and producer best known for his 2011 film Sanctum. His other credits include Ghosts of the Abyss, Aliens of the Deep and Expedition: Bismarck. On February 4, 2012, he was killed in a helicopter crash near the town of Nowra in Australia. The crash also claimed the life of American filmmaker Mike deGruy.

Wight worked closely with James Cameron on several projects and helped to design the 3D technology behind Avatar, and US cinematographer Mike deGruy were killed when the chopper Wight was flying crashed on takeoff at an airstrip near Berry, south of Wollongong, on Saturday.

It is believed the pair were working on James Cameron's next project to film the Mariana Trench, which contains the deepest ocean on the planet.

Cameron approached Mr Wight out of the blue to help him make a documentary on the Titanic in 2000. Wight went on to produce many of Mr Cameron's 3D IMAX films and television specials and was recently named the head of the Cameron Pace Group office in Melbourne, Mr Cameron's first global 3D production office.

When Cameron turned his attention to making the box-office smash hit Avatar, Mr Wight began making the 3D film Sanctum, based on his own near-death underwater experience. The film went on to gross $100 million worldwide, making it the most successful Australian film of 2011. Sanctum director Alister Grierson said the Australian film industry had lost one of its most dynamic filmmakers. Grierson said his technical knowledge of underwater filming was what attracted Mr Cameron to contact him.

Andrew Wight is survived by his wife Monica and his one-year-old son Ted.
